Stretch Wrap Done Right: Anchoring Loads to the Pallet

How to stretch-wrap a pallet so the load and the deck move as one — anchoring, wrap patterns, film choice and the mistakes that cause shifted freight.

Most shifted-load damage traces back to one misunderstanding: stretch wrap is not a way to bundle boxes — it’s a way to attach freight to a pallet. Wrap that circles the cartons but never locks onto the pallet itself produces a tidy-looking unit that slides straight off its deck under braking. The goal of every wrap job is a single rigid unit: load and pallet moving together, or not at all.

Here’s the technique that achieves that, the patterns and film choices that matter, and the wrap mistakes that show up later as damage claims.

The principle: load-to-pallet, not box-to-box

A correctly wrapped pallet resists the forces of transit — braking, cornering, dock ramps, tailgate lifts — because the film ties the freight to the deck it sits on. That means the wrap must do three jobs:

  1. Anchor to the pallet itself, catching the corners or base of the deck so the film can’t ride up.
  2. Contain the load in continuous, overlapping courses so no carton can migrate outward.
  3. Unitize top to bottom, so the upper layers can’t shear sideways over the lower ones.

Wrap that only does job two — the common mistake — leaves a load that looks secure and isn’t. When freight arrives leaning or collapsed with the wrap still intact around the boxes, this is almost always why. A wrapping sequence that works

For hand wrapping a typical stacked-carton skid:

  1. Start at the base. Tie the film tail to a pallet corner or tuck it under a deck board — never just press it against a box. Make the first wraps around the pallet and the bottom course of cartons together, several overlapping passes, as tight as you can pull them. This is the anchor; be generous here.
  2. Spiral upward with overlap. Work up the load in continuous wraps, each overlapping the last by about half the film width. Keep tension on the film the whole way — stretch film does its work when it’s actually stretched as applied, then tries to recover.
  3. Wrap past the top edge. Carry the film over the top course of cartons, catching the upper edge so the top layer is locked in. If dust or weather is a concern, lay a top sheet first and wrap over it.
  4. Come back down. A descending spiral adds a second crossing layer and doubles the coverage where the courses cross.
  5. Finish at the base with extra passes, then tear and press the tail firmly onto the film below — a flapping tail catches on everything.
  6. Test it. Push firmly on an upper corner. If a box moves independently of the pallet, the unit isn’t done.

Squared, stable stacking underneath is a precondition — heavy cartons at the bottom, columns aligned, no pyramiding — and so is a sound deck, which is where choosing the right pallet type comes in. Wrap secures a good stack; it doesn’t fix a bad one.

Film choice and tension

Stretch film varies in thickness (gauge) and formulation, and the practical guidance is simple: heavier and sharper-edged loads need heavier film or more layers. Light cartons ride fine under standard hand film; loads with corners that can puncture — machinery, fasteners, metal fabrications — want heavier gauge, corner protection, or strapping instead of or in addition to wrap.

Tension is the half of film performance that technique controls. Film applied slack is just a dust cover. Whether by hand or machine, the film should be visibly elongating as it’s applied so its recovery force clamps the load continuously. Machine wrappers pre-stretch film substantially and meter tension consistently, which is why high-volume shippers use them — but a disciplined hand wrap with real tension outperforms a careless machine pass.

Two additions worth keeping on the shelf:

  • Corner boards (edge protectors) spread film tension along the vertical edges, protect carton corners from cutting, and noticeably stiffen the whole column.
  • Top sheets keep dust and incidental moisture off mixed loads and give the final wraps something to grip across the top.

The failure patterns carriers see

The same wrap mistakes account for most preventable load damage:

  • No pallet anchor — film wrapped around boxes only; the entire load can slide off the deck as a unit.
  • Stopping short of the top — the top course shifts or topples in transit while everything below arrives fine.
  • Slack film — plenty of layers, no tension; the load works loose over an hour of normal driving.
  • Wrapping a leaning stack — film locks the lean in place, and the lean grows with every corner until it becomes a collapse.
  • Overhang wrapped as-is — cartons past the pallet edge can’t be contained properly and arrive with crushed corners.

Every one of these is cheaper to fix at the wrap stage than to argue about afterward through a freight claim. When wrap alone isn’t enough

Stretch wrap is a containment tool, not a restraint. Dense, top-heavy or slick-surfaced freight — machinery, stacked sheet goods, drums, anything whose mass would laugh at plastic film — needs banding or strapping to the deck, with wrap as a secondary layer if at all. The rule of thumb: if the load’s weight could shear through the film in a hard stop, the film was never the right primary securing method.

Frequently asked questions

How many layers of stretch wrap does a pallet need?

There's no universal number — it depends on load weight, stability and how far the freight travels. The reliable principle is coverage, not count: several overlapping wraps locked around the pallet base, continuous overlapping spirals up the load, and extra passes at the base and top where forces concentrate. If you can shift a corner box by hand after wrapping, it needs more.

Should the wrap cover the top of the load?

For most freight, wrapping over the top edge and adding a top sheet is worthwhile — it stabilizes the highest cartons and keeps dust and light moisture off. Fully sealing a load isn't necessary for typical B2B freight, but the top course of boxes should never be left outside the wrap.

Is machine wrapping better than hand wrapping?

Machine wrapping applies more consistent tension and pre-stretches film more effectively, which generally produces a tighter unit with less film. Hand wrapping works fine for lower volumes when the technique is right — anchored to the base, tight overlapping courses, film stretched as it's applied. Volume, not quality, is usually what justifies the machine.
