Banding and Strapping Freight: When Wrap Isn't Enough

There’s a class of freight that stretch wrap simply cannot hold: machinery on a skid, stacked sheet metal, dense cartons of fasteners, anything whose weight would tear through plastic film in a hard stop. For that freight, the securing method is banding — strapping the load to the pallet under real tension, with material chosen for the job. Wrap contains; strap restrains. Knowing which job your freight needs is the difference between a load that arrives as built and one that arrives as a story.

This guide covers the three strapping materials you’ll choose between, the accessories that make strapping effective instead of destructive, and the situations where banding is the only responsible choice.

When freight needs strap, not just wrap

The threshold question is force. Stretch film resists a load’s tendency to shift with the recovery tension of stretched plastic — enough for stacked cartons, nowhere near enough for concentrated mass. Reach for strapping when:

  • The load is dense or heavy for its size — machinery, dies, motors, stone, coils, boxed metal parts.
  • The load is rigid and slick — sheet goods, panels, crated items that slide as a block.
  • The load is top-heavy or narrow-based, where film tension can’t stop a tipping moment.
  • The freight travels far or gets rehandled — every extra dock and transfer multiplies the chance a marginal wrap job fails.
  • A single piece needs to be married to the pallet — the classic case being equipment bolted or strapped to a skid, covered in our guide to crating versus palletizing machinery.

If the honest answer to “would the film survive this load in a panic stop?” is no, strapping is the primary securing method and stretch wrap becomes the secondary layer for surface protection and containment.

Steel, polyester or polypropylene

Three materials cover nearly all freight strapping. Their differences are practical, not academic:

Steel strap is the traditional heavyweight. It doesn’t stretch, so what you tension is what you keep — ideal for rigid loads that won’t settle. Its downsides are handling: sharp edges, spring-back when cut, and the need for notch or crimp seals and dedicated tensioners.

Polyester strap has taken over much of steel’s territory for good reason. It approaches steel’s working strength for palletized freight while being lighter, safer to cut, and slightly elastic — it keeps tension on loads that settle or compress in transit, where steel would go slack. Battery-powered friction-weld tools make PET fast to apply with no separate seals.

Polypropylene strap is for light work. It’s inexpensive and everywhere, but it elongates under load and relaxes with time and temperature, so it should never be the thing holding a heavy load onto a pallet.

A note on strength ratings: strapping carries a break strength from its manufacturer, and working loads should stay well below it. Match the strap specification to the load rather than guessing — suppliers publish ratings for exactly this reason.

Edge protection: the detail that saves the load

Strap under tension concentrates force along a narrow line, and at every corner that line becomes a blade. Unprotected, tensioned strap crushes carton edges, gouges wood, and can slowly cut into its own load until the strap goes slack — the load damages itself out of its own restraint.

Edge protectors solve both problems at once. Placed under the strap at each corner, they:

  • Spread the tension across a wider bearing surface, protecting the freight.
  • Protect the strap from sharp load edges — metal corners can abrade or cut strap in transit.
  • Hold tension longer by preventing the strap from biting in and creating slack.

Plastic corner guards, moulded pulp protectors and heavy laminated cardboard angles all work; what matters is that something sits between strap and corner at every direction change. For finished-surface freight — enclosures, cabinets, anything painted — edge protection is also cosmetic insurance, a concern that runs through all of shipping fragile equipment.

Tools and technique

Strapping is a tension system, and the tools are what create the tension:

  1. Thread the strap through the pallet, around stringers or between blocks, so load and deck are tied together — then around or over the load.
  2. Tension with a proper tensioner — a manual windlass or feedwheel tool, or a battery tool that tensions and seals in one cycle. Hand-tight is not tensioned.
  3. Seal the joint — crimp seals for steel, friction welds or wire buckles for plastic strap. The joint is the weakest point; a sloppy seal wastes everything upstream of it.
  4. Use two straps minimum on any full pallet load, placed to oppose the directions the load could move. Heavy single pieces often warrant more, in both directions.
  5. Check after tensioning — straps should be tight enough that they can’t be slid along the load by hand, with edge protection seated where it was placed.

And treat cutting with the same respect as tensioning: proper cutters, body out of the recoil path, eye protection. Tensioned strap — steel especially — releases its energy all at once. Receivers opening your freight deserve the same predictability, which is one reason clean, conventional strapping practice matters at both ends, whoever handles the loading and unloading.

What good banding buys you

A properly strapped load survives the events that wreck marginal freight: the hard stop on the 401, the dock plate bump, the tailgate cycle, the second handling at a transfer. It also reads as professional freight at pickup — drivers can see at a glance that the unit will ride safely, and if something ever does go wrong, evidence of sound preparation strengthens your position rather than undermining it when damage has to be documented and claimed.

Frequently asked questions

Should strapping go over the load or through the pallet?

Through the pallet, whenever the design allows it. Threading the strap between the deck boards and around the stringers or blocks ties the load to the pallet itself, which is the whole point. Straps that only circle the load bundle it together but leave the bundle free to slide off the deck.

Can I use strapping and stretch wrap together?

Yes, and for heavy or mixed freight it's often the best combination. Strapping provides the structural restraint that holds the load to the pallet; wrap adds surface protection, keeps small items contained and covers the load against dust. Strap first, then wrap over it.

Is steel strapping dangerous to cut?

It demands respect. Tensioned steel strap stores real energy and can spring loose sharply when cut, so the practice is to use proper strap cutters, keep a hand or foot controlling the strap ends, stand to the side, and wear eye protection and gloves. Never cut tensioned strap with claw hammers or side cutters at face height.
