Stone is the densest freight most businesses will ever put on a truck, and that single fact drives everything about how it moves. A crate of fabricated countertops that looks compact on the shop floor can outweigh a full skid of packaged goods; a load that seems reasonable can push a vehicle to its payload limit with room left over in the box. Moving stone well comes down to three disciplines: knowing the real weight, packaging it to ride on edge, and landing it at the site when the installers — not just the calendar — are ready.

Respect the density, because the truck has to

Granite, quartz and porcelain composites sit around 2,600–2,700 kilograms per cubic metre — several times denser than most manufactured freight. In practical terms, a standard 3 cm countertop runs roughly 18 to 20 pounds per square foot, so an ordinary kitchen’s worth of tops lands in the hundreds of pounds and a multi-job crate climbs fast toward four figures.

That matters because vehicle payload, not cargo space, is the binding constraint. A 26-foot box truck that swallows a stone crate spatially may be carrying a meaningful fraction of its payload in that single piece — our trucks carry up to 10,000 lbs, and stone is one of the few commodities that gets there without filling the box. Accurate weights at booking are not paperwork; they decide which vehicle shows up and whether the delivery method you’re expecting is physically possible.

How fabricated stone is packaged to travel

Like glass, stone is strong on edge and brittle across its face, so finished tops ride vertical:

  • A-frames carry tops leaned a few degrees off vertical on padded rails — the standard for fabricator-to-site runs where trained crews load and unload.
  • Wood crates block the pieces on edge with foam between faces, built for shipments that other people will handle. A good crate is marked for orientation and built to be moved by forklift or pallet jack from the base.
  • Skidded flat packing appears for small pieces — vanity tops, sills, cut offcuts — with rigid separation between layers. It works only because small pieces don’t flex the way long spans do.

Cutouts are the weak points. A top with a sink or cooktop opening has thin webs of stone at the corners, and those webs crack under flex or point loads. Fabricators rod or brace cutouts before shipping, and the packaging should support the piece continuously along its length.

Honest limits: where courier equipment ends

This is the part worth being direct about. Stone freight spans two different worlds, and only one of them is courier work:

A tailgate is rated equipment: a crate within its safe working load and footprint grounds cleanly and rolls away on a pallet jack; a crate beyond either limit does not, no matter how close the truck can park. And no lift platform helps if the “delivery” actually means carrying tops up a stair or through a finished lobby — that’s an install-crew task, not a freight task. The way to avoid all of these surprises is the same: real weights, real dimensions, and a plain description of the delivery end when you book. Tailgate delivery is well suited to stone within its ratings, and the ratings are exactly why the details matter.

Site timing: stone arrives when the job is ready for it

Countertops sit at a precise point in a construction or renovation sequence: after cabinets are installed and templated, before plumbing and appliances go back in. That position makes timing less forgiving than for most materials delivered to job sites. Early is genuinely bad — finished stone staged on a live site is an invitation to chips and cracked corners. Late idles an install crew that was booked around the delivery.

The pattern that works is coordination between three parties: the fabricator confirms when the pieces clear final inspection, the installer confirms when the site is ready to receive, and the carrier runs the freight inside that overlap — often the same day the pieces are finished. It’s the same rhythm that governs cabinet and millwork deliveries: the freight is one step in a schedule, and the schedule is what the delivery has to serve.

Receiving: inspect on edge, sign with eyes open

At delivery, keep the pieces vertical while checking them. Look at edges, corners and cutout webs — the places stone actually fails — and count pieces against the paperwork. Anything questionable gets noted on the proof of delivery before the signature, because a clean POD is the document every later conversation starts from. Hairline cracks can hide under wrap and surface at installation, so fabricators and installers who photograph pieces at handover save themselves arguments later.

Generally no. Full slabs are handled with slab racks, clamps and boom-equipped forklifts, and they move between quarries, distributors and fabricators on trucks built for that work.
