Delivering Packaged Industrial Fluids and Lubricants
How packaged oils, lubricants and industrial fluids move as freight — sealed pails and drums on skids, securement, DG declarations and delivery paperwork.

Grease, hydraulic oil, coolant, cutting fluid, way oil — the products that keep machine shops and plants running mostly travel the same way: sealed factory packaging, stacked on a skid, moving from a distributor’s warehouse to the customer’s floor. This article covers that packaged side of the business — pails, drums, jugs and cases on pallets — not bulk tanker work, which is a different industry with different equipment. Packaged freight, not bulk
The defining fact of packaged fluid distribution is that the product ships in its sealed retail or industrial container, and the container does the containment work. Common formats:
- Pails — typically 18.9-litre (5-gallon) steel or plastic, shipped in layers on a skid
- Drums — 205-litre (45-gallon) steel or poly, usually four to a standard pallet
- Cases of jugs and bottles — smaller consumer-industrial sizes, cartoned and stacked
- Totes (IBCs) — intermediate bulk containers around 1,000 litres, one per skid, at the heavy end of what moves on a straight truck
From a carrier’s point of view this is skid and pallet freight: the unit of handling is the pallet, loading happens by forklift or tailgate, and the product never leaves its packaging in transit. No hoses, no pumping, no tank washouts — that is bulk carriage, and it is not what a pallet carrier does.
Weight density is the number that matters
Fluids are dense freight, and underestimating weight is the most common booking mistake in this category. A skid of pails that looks modest can run well past the weight of a much larger skid of dry goods, and a four-drum pallet of oil routinely lands in the several-hundred-kilogram range. Two practical consequences:
First, give the carrier the loaded weight, not the piece count. “Two skids of pails” tells a dispatcher almost nothing; “two skids, about 700 kg each” tells them which vehicle to send and whether a dock or forklift is needed at each end. Straight trucks carry up to about 10,000 lbs, so most packaged-fluid orders fit — but the math should be done before the truck is assigned, not at the dock.
Second, weight concentrates stress on the pallet itself. Drums and pails need sound pallets with intact deck boards, because a stringer that cracks under a forklift turns a routine delivery into a cleanup. Distributors who ship fluids daily tend to keep their best pallets for this freight, and it shows at delivery time.
Securement: the load has to move as one piece
A fluid skid travels well when the containers cannot shift relative to the pallet. The standard approach is layered: pails stack in interlocked tiers with slip sheets between layers, drums sit tight against each other and get banded or strapped to the deck, and the whole unit is stretch-wrapped down to the pallet so the wrap anchors the load rather than just bundling the containers. Totes are strapped, full stop — a thousand litres of liquid has momentum, and wrap alone is not securement for a mass like that.
The other securement rule is about condition: a leaking container should never be loaded. A weeping pail contaminates everything below it on the truck, creates a slip hazard at the dock, and turns into a dispute about where the damage happened. Carriers are right to refuse it, and shippers protect themselves by catching it first. The same inspect-before-loading habit that serves manufacturers shipping finished goods applies doubly to liquids.
Dangerous goods: the shipper declares, every time
Some industrial fluids are regulated under Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) framework — flammable solvents and certain low-flashpoint products are the obvious examples — while many conventional lubricants and oils are not. The dividing line is set by the product’s classification, which lives on its safety data sheet, not by how the freight looks on a skid.
The responsibility structure here is worth being precise about. Classifying and declaring dangerous goods is the shipper’s obligation. The shipper determines whether a product is regulated, applies the required marks and documentation, and declares it when booking. The carrier’s side of the conversation is confirming whether it can accept a declared DG shipment with the required handling in place — a confirmation to get explicitly, in advance, not an assumption to make. If you ship a mixed catalogue where some SKUs are regulated and most are not, flag the regulated ones at booking every time; a quote built on “general freight” does not cover an undeclared drum of solvent. The good news for most lubricant distributors: the bulk of the catalogue — engine oils, hydraulic fluids, greases, gear oils — typically ships as standard freight, which is why the category fits pallet carriers so well.
Delivery: docks, tailgates and clean paperwork
Fluid deliveries end in two kinds of places. Distributor-to-distributor and plant deliveries usually have docks and forklifts, and the skid comes off the truck the normal way. Deliveries to smaller machine shops, garages and service businesses often don’t — and that is where a tailgate earns its keep, lowering the skid to ground level so it can travel the last few metres by pallet jack. Whatever the receiving setup, the close-out is the same: the receiver counts pieces, checks for leaks or dented containers, and signs the proof of delivery. With fluids, that visual check matters more than usual — a dent in a pail lid is the kind of thing that becomes a warehouse floor problem two weeks later, and noting it at delivery is what keeps a claim simple.

How heavy is a skid of pails or drums?
Heavier than it looks. A full 205-litre drum of oil typically weighs in the range of 180 kg or more, and a skid of 18.9-litre pails stacks weight quickly in a small footprint. Always give the carrier the loaded skid weight, not the count, so the right vehicle and loading method are assigned.
Can a carrier deliver drums to a shop without a dock or forklift?
Yes, if the truck has a tailgate. The skid is lowered to ground level on the lift platform and moved with a pallet jack. Ask for the tailgate at booking, because a truck without one cannot ground a drum skid at a no-dock shop.
