How do I measure a skid's dimensions correctly?

Quick answer

Measure the loaded skid at its extremes: length and width at the widest points — including any freight overhanging the pallet edges — and height from the floor to the highest point, which includes the pallet itself. Record the weight as the loaded total, pallet included. Carriers assign vehicles and price from these outside dimensions, so a load that leans, bulges or overhangs measures bigger than the pallet under it.

Grab a tape measure and measure the skid as it will ship — loaded, wrapped, and including every part that sticks out. The number a carrier needs is not the pallet’s size; it’s the space the finished unit occupies on a truck. Nearly every measuring mistake in freight comes from the gap between those two ideas: quoting the deck instead of the load, forgetting the pallet in the height, or ignoring the box flap or machine handle that adds four inches to one side.

Measure in four steps

  1. Length — run the tape along the longer horizontal side, at the widest point of the load, not the deck. If freight overhangs either end, measure tip to tip.
  2. Width — the same across the shorter side. Check at several heights; loads bulge in the middle and lean at the top, and the widest point wins.
  3. Height — floor to the highest point of the load. The tape starts at the ground, so the pallet’s own height (roughly five to six inches for standard wood decks) is automatically inside the number. Include anything that rises above the general stack — a valve, a handle, a carton stacked proud.
  4. Weight — the loaded total, pallet and packaging included. A scale reading is best; summed product weights plus a pallet allowance is an acceptable second.

Write the three dimensions in a consistent order — length × width × height is the freight convention — and label the units. That one line, plus the weight, is most of a quote request.

Why overhang counts

If freight extends past the pallet edges, the shipment is the size of the freight, not the pallet. A 48″ × 40″ deck carrying a crated frame that overhangs six inches per end is, for every practical purpose, a 60-inch shipment: that’s the space it consumes on the deck, the clearance it needs through doors, and the dimension the carrier must plan around.

Overhang is worth measuring honestly and then, where possible, eliminating — freight outside the footprint is the freight that gets crushed against walls and neighbouring skids, and it can make a load unsafe to lift. If the product is genuinely bigger than the deck, a larger pallet is the better fix than a cantilevered load. The measurements do real work — here’s what they decide

Dimensions and weight aren’t administrative trivia; they drive three concrete decisions. Second, loading method: weight and footprint determine what a tailgate can safely lift and what a pallet jack can move. Understated measurements therefore don’t save money; they create failure. A truck sized to the quoted numbers arrives, the real skid doesn’t fit or exceeds what the tailgate handles, and the shipment re-runs on different equipment — later, and at the price it should have been quoted at originally.

The mistakes that cause most bad measurements

A short list covers nearly all of them:

  • Quoting the pallet footprint as the shipment size while the load overhangs or bulges past it.
  • Forgetting the pallet in the height — measuring the stacked freight from deck level instead of the floor.
  • Measuring before wrapping and final stacking, then adding a top layer that changes the height.
  • Guessing weight from memory instead of a scale or documentation — dense product punishes optimism.
  • Dropping the units, leaving the carrier to wonder whether 48 means inches or centimetres.

Each is avoidable with the same habit: measure last, after the skid is fully built and wrapped, and measure the extremes.

Measuring a multi-skid shipment

When several skids ship together, measure each one individually rather than describing the shipment as “four standard skids.” Identical product often produces non-identical skids — one runs taller because it took the remainder, another carries the dense items. List each skid’s dimensions and weight on its own line, then give the totals. The per-skid detail is what lets the dispatcher confirm everything fits one vehicle’s deck space and payload together; the totals are a cross-check. If one skid in the set is the outlier — oversized, overweight, oddly shaped — flag it specifically, because the outlier is what determines the equipment for the whole run.

Either works, but say which. Canadian freight runs on a mix of both — pallet footprints are usually quoted in inches (48 by 40 is the standard), while weights appear in pounds and kilograms. State the unit with every number and there's no room for a costly misread.

Do I include the pallet in the weight?

Yes — the truck carries the pallet too. A typical wooden pallet adds a real amount of weight on its own, so weigh or estimate the loaded unit as a whole. If you can't put the skid on a scale, sum the product weight from packing documentation and add an allowance for the pallet and packaging.

What if my skid is a few inches bigger than I quoted?

Small honest variances are usually absorbable, but understating dimensions risks the assigned vehicle arriving unable to fit or legally carry the load — which means re-quoting and re-running the shipment. When in doubt, round up. A slightly conservative measurement never strands freight; an optimistic one can.
