Can I ship a skid same-day in the GTA?

A purchase order lands, the customer needs the freight today, and it’s sitting on a skid in your warehouse. Can it move? Yes — same-day skid delivery is one of the most ordinary things a commercial courier does in the GTA. The mechanism that makes it possible is the direct run: a vehicle picks up your skid and drives it straight to the destination, with nothing in between.

How same-day skid delivery works

Same-day works because direct routing removes every step that consumes time in a freight network. There is no terminal, no cross-dock, no sorting, no waiting for a trailer to fill — the skid is loaded once at your location and unloaded once at delivery. The transit time is essentially the drive time, which is what makes “ordered this morning, delivered this afternoon” physically achievable across the GTA.

The sequence is short:

1. You book, providing dimensions, weight, both addresses and the loading situation at each end.
2. A vehicle is assigned — one whose deck space, payload and equipment match the skid.
3. The driver picks up from your dock or, at a no-dock location, grounds-loads by tailgate.
4. The skid rides direct to the destination and is delivered, with the signed proof of delivery closing out the run.

Because nothing is consolidated, what leaves your dock is exactly what arrives — same skid, same wrap, same condition. That routing difference is the core of the direct-versus-LTL trade-off, and it’s why urgent, fragile and high-value freight defaults to direct service.

What makes a skid a good same-day candidate

Any skid a straight truck can carry is a candidate; the freight that benefits most shares a trait: today genuinely matters. Typical same-day skid work in the GTA looks like line-down parts a plant is waiting on, stock transfers between a company’s own locations, materials a job site needs to keep trades working, and orders promised to a customer for today.

Weight is rarely the obstacle. Skids from a hundred pounds up to straight-truck payload move same-day on the appropriate vehicle — a light skid may ride a cargo van or Sprinter, a heavy one a 26-foot box truck. What you need ready when you book

A same-day run leaves no slack for surprises, so the booking details carry more weight than usual. Have four things accurate:

• Loaded dimensions and weight — they decide the vehicle, and on a same-day clock there’s no time to swap trucks because the skid turned out taller than described.
• Loading at both ends — dock, forklift, or neither. If either end has neither, say so at booking so a tailgate-equipped truck is assigned; the details are in our answer on whether you need a forklift at pickup.
• Receiving reality at the destination — confirm the receiver’s hours and that someone will be there to accept and sign.
• The skid, actually ready — wrapped, labelled, paperwork prepared. The economics of a direct run are the vehicle and the drive; freight that isn’t ready when the driver arrives spends the day’s margin in the parking lot.

Same-day versus rush: two speeds of urgent

Within urgent freight there are really two products, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re asking for. Same-day direct means the skid picks up and delivers within the same business day — the vehicle runs straight to the destination on a schedule that fits the day’s dispatch. Rush compresses that further: the next suitable vehicle goes straight to the destination, ahead of routine work, for freight that is actively holding something up — a stopped production line, a crew standing around, a hard cutoff at the receiver.

Most “need it today” skids are well served by same-day direct. Reserve rush for the genuine emergencies, and describe the real situation when you book — a dispatcher who knows what’s at stake can sequence the work honestly instead of treating every shipment as equally on fire.

When same-day isn’t the right call

If the freight isn’t needed until tomorrow, same-day is the wrong product — not because it won’t work, but because you’d be paying for exclusivity and speed the deadline doesn’t require.
