A steel service centre’s whole value proposition is speed: buy processed material — cut to length, sheared to size, ready for the shop floor — instead of full mill quantities on mill lead times. But that proposition only holds if the last leg keeps up. When a fabricator orders plate blanks at 9 a.m. because a job is on the table, the cut stock needs to cross the city the same day, and the delivery run becomes part of the product. This is how that last leg actually works: what ships, which vehicle fits which material, how it’s secured, and what happens at the fabricator’s door.
What service centres actually ship
Service centre freight is processed steel in job-sized quantities, and the mix is more varied than outsiders expect. A typical day’s outbound includes flame-cut and plasma-cut plate blanks, sheared sheet stacked and banded on skids, saw-cut bar, tube and angle in bundles, and small quantities of structural shapes headed to shops that don’t carry inventory. Order sizes run from a single cut piece a machinist is waiting on to multi-skid drops feeding a production run.
Two things make this freight distinctive. First, density: steel weighs in fast, and a short stack of plate can outweigh a full pallet of boxed goods, so payload — not floor space — is what fills the truck. Second, urgency: much of it is ordered against a job that is already underway, which is why so much of it moves on same-day direct runs rather than waiting for a next-day network.
Matching the vehicle to the material
The material dictates the vehicle more directly than in almost any other freight category:
- Skidded plate and sheared sheet rides in a box truck like any dense pallet — loaded by forklift at the centre’s dock, delivered to a dock or grounded by tailgate within the platform’s rating. Weight per skid is the number to watch.

Securement is not optional, and edges are not friendly
Steel moves against every strap and block it isn’t tight against, and it wins every argument with cardboard. Sound practice on this freight is consistent across the industry:
- Banding to the skid, not just around the bundle, so the load and the pallet move as one unit.
- Dunnage between layers of plate and sheet, both to protect surfaces and to give forks a place to enter.
- Edge protection under straps — sheared edges cut webbing, and a cut strap is a failed strap.
- Tie-downs on open-bed loads at proper intervals, with the load blocked against sliding forward. Can steel bar and tube ship in an enclosed truck?
Short lengths that fit within the box and can be loaded through the rear door ship enclosed without issue, usually banded to a skid. Long stock is a different problem — it often loads better over the side of an open bed, secured with tie-downs, which is why open-bed vehicles remain the practical answer for full-length bar, tube and angle.
Does cut steel need to be protected from rain in transit?
It depends on the material and the customer's process. Hot-rolled structural stock is routinely carried open and surface rust is expected and dealt with.
