  • Band through the pallet, so the load and the deck move as one unit under a forklift.
  • Keep the weight over the stringers and inside the footprint; steel concentrated on one corner of a light-duty pallet goes through it.
  • Layer with dunnage — wood strips between layers stop pieces from working against each other and marring surfaces.
  • Point count on the paperwork: how many pieces, so the receiver can verify at a glance.

Skidded steel is standard skid and pallet freight: forklift-loaded at the shop, dock- or tailgate-delivered at the other end. Long and awkward pieces: open bed and tie-downs

Handrail, angle, stringers, tube frames and anything else that measures in metres doesn’t fit a pallet or an enclosed van — it ships on an open bed, strapped down. For the size class below flatbed work, that’s a pickup truck with tie-down points: long stock rides the bed and racks, secured at multiple points so it can’t slide, bounce or rotate. It’s a distinct vehicle class for a reason — a van can’t take a six-metre rail, and sending a flatbed for one is paying for deck you don’t need.

Open-deck transport is normal for steel because the material tolerates weather that would ruin most freight. The exceptions are finish-critical: freshly painted, powder-coated or polished architectural work either rides enclosed or gets wrapped and padded so road grit can’t get at the finish. Securement: the piece must not move

Securement is the heart of steel freight, and the standard is blunt: the load cannot shift under braking, cornering or road shock. In Ontario, cargo securement on commercial vehicles is a regulated matter under National Safety Code standards — drivers and carriers own compliance, but fabricators who prep loads well make every run faster and safer. The practice:

  1. Dunnage under the piece — wood between steel and deck, so forks and straps have room and the piece can’t slide on metal-to-metal contact.
  2. Straps or chains matched to the load — chains and binders for heavy raw sections; synthetic straps with edge protectors for finished and coated work, because a chain across powder coat is a refinishing order.
  3. Multiple tie points, opposing directions — the piece is held against moving forward, backward and sideways, not just pressed downward.
  4. Protect the strap from the steel, too. Sheared plate edges cut webbing; corner protectors save both the coating and the strap.
  5. Nothing loose rides along. Offcuts, hardware and small parts go in a secured bin or on the skid — not loose on a deck.
