The core fact: machined metal concentrates a lot of weight on a small footprint. A half-skid of steel shafts or fixture plates can outweigh a full skid of packaged goods several times over. That changes three things about the shipment.
First, the pallet has to be rated for the load — an ordinary reused pallet with a cracked stringer fails under a forklift exactly when you least want it to. Second, the weight must be declared accurately, because the carrier assigns the vehicle and loading method based on it. Third, handling equipment at both ends matters more than usual: a dense load that a forklift lifts easily may exceed what a lift-gate platform safely handles, which is why dock-to-dock is the default for the heaviest skids and tailgate delivery is a deliberate booking choice, not an afterthought.
Build the skid around the weight, not the box count
A skid of finished parts should move as one rigid unit. The practices that get it there:
- Use a hardwood pallet in good condition, sized so nothing overhangs the deck. Overhanging steel gets caught, crushed and bent.
- Put the weight low and centred. Heavy billets and plates on the bottom, lighter finished assemblies above, and the centre of gravity as low as it will go.
- Band the parts to the deck, not just to each other. Steel or poly banding through the pallet anchors the load so it cannot slide when the truck brakes. Stretch wrap goes over the banding, not instead of it.
- Separate layers with dunnage. Plywood sheets, foam or corrugated between layers stop parts from rubbing and peening each other over an hour of road vibration.
- Cap or sleeve threads, bores and sealing faces. The features that took the longest to machine are the ones a shifting neighbour ruins first.

Protect the finish, not just the part
A machined part can arrive structurally intact and still be rejected. Corrosion and contact damage are the two failure modes that packaging has to defeat:
- Corrosion: bare steel picks up surface rust from humidity alone. A film of rust preventative oil or VCI (vapour corrosion inhibitor) paper or bags is cheap insurance, especially on ground or polished surfaces.
- Contact damage: dings, scratches and burred edges from parts touching in transit. Individual wrapping, egg-crate foam, or simple corrugated dividers keep finished faces apart.
Tight-tolerance and cosmetic work earns a wooden crate. A crate costs more in time and material than wrap, but it turns the shipment into a box that can be handled normally without anyone needing to know what is inside.
Match the vehicle to the load
Machine shop shipments span a wide range, and the vehicle should track the freight rather than default to the biggest truck available. A single carton of small components rides in a minivan. A few hundred pounds of parts on a half skid suits a cargo van.
