Shipping Signage and Displays Without Wrecking Them

How to ship signs, channel letters and displays without damage — edge protection, crating, vehicle choice and direct delivery for oversized fragile flat goods.

Signage is some of the most damage-prone freight in the B2B world: large, flat, rigid, finished on the visible face, and often worth far more than its weight suggests. A scratched acrylic face or a cracked ACM panel doesn’t get touched up on site — it goes back to the shop and gets remade, and the installation crew that was booked for today stands down. The whole discipline of shipping signage comes down to one idea: protect faces and edges, and minimize the number of times anyone touches the piece.

Know what kind of signage freight you have

“Signage” covers several different freight problems, and the handling follows the material:

  • Flat rigid panels — ACM, aluminum, PVC board, printed acrylic. Oversized, can’t bear weight, damaged by flex and by anything leaning against the face.
  • Channel letters and dimensional pieces — irregular shapes with vulnerable returns and faces; usually boxed individually with padding.
  • Sign cabinets and pylon components — heavy fabricated assemblies with finished surfaces, often with acrylic or polycarbonate faces installed.
  • Banners and soft signage — the easy ones; rolled on cores, tubed or boxed, resilient in transit.
  • POP and retail displays — knocked-down flat-packs or assembled units; assembled displays are bulky, light and fragile all at once.

The first four share a rule: the printed or finished face touches nothing during transit. Everything about packing and vehicle choice flows from that.

Pack for edges, faces and flex

Most signage damage happens at three points — edges, faces and mid-panel flex — so protection targets all three. Edge protection (corner guards or channel foam) keeps the most vulnerable part of a panel from taking impacts. Face protection (foam sheet, adhesive film, or simply packing face-to-back rather than face-to-face without a separator) prevents scratches that no amount of careful driving can prevent once panels rub. And rigid bracing — a crate, an A-frame, or a skid with vertical supports — stops large panels from flexing, which is what cracks acrylic and delaminates composites.

For multi-panel orders, an A-frame or slot crate that holds each panel vertically and separately is worth the shop time it takes to build. Loose-stacked panels grinding against each other for an hour of driving arrive pre-scuffed.

The vehicle matters as much as the packaging

Oversized flat goods need two things from a vehicle: enough clear deck or wall space to carry panels flat or safely upright, and an enclosed body so weather and road grit never reach the work. A high-roof cargo van or Sprinter handles most panel work and boxed letter sets; a 26-foot box truck takes full sign cabinets, crated pylons and multi-crate orders, with a tailgate to ground heavy crates at street-level sites. Open-deck vehicles are for structural steel and raw stock — not finished sign faces.

Just as important is what the vehicle doesn’t carry: other people’s freight. In a shared network, your panels ride with whatever else is on the truck and get re-handled at every terminal. Deliver to the install, not just the address

Sign deliveries usually feed an installation crew — which makes the timing window part of the freight job. A crane booked for a pylon install, a mall corridor available only before opening hours, a storefront crew scheduled for a specific morning: the sign has to be there when the crew is, not sometime that day. Coordinating the delivery against the install window is the difference between a crew that works and a crew that waits.

Displays and retail rollouts

POP displays and retail fixtures add a wrinkle: multiplicity. A rollout might mean the same display delivered to many stores across a region on a tight calendar. Flat-packed units palletize well and move as ordinary skid freight; assembled displays are light but bulky and fragile, and they fill a vehicle quickly. For rollouts across the GTA and Southern Ontario, the practical approach is to plan the drops as a route — grouped by geography, sequenced against store receiving hours — rather than booking each store as a one-off.

Why do signs get damaged in normal freight networks?

Because network freight is built for stackable boxes and skids, and signs are neither. Large flat panels get leaned on, stacked under other freight, or flexed during repeated re-handling at terminals. Every extra touch is a chance for a scratched face or a cracked edge, which is why sign makers favour direct, single-vehicle delivery.

Should a sign be crated or just wrapped?

It depends on the material and the route. Soft goods like banners travel fine rolled in tubes or boxes. Rigid panels usually need edge protection and face padding at minimum; printed acrylic, glass-faced pieces and finished dimensional work justify a proper crate or A-frame. The longer the route and the more handling, the stronger the case for crating.

Can channel letters ship fully assembled?

Individual channel letters usually ship boxed with padding, faces protected. Fully assembled sign cabinets and raceway-mounted letter sets can ship as one piece if they're braced and secured so nothing flexes — which typically means an enclosed vehicle with proper tie-down points and a crew that understands the piece can't be laid face-down.
