If you’ve ever wondered why a carrier keeps pressing you for the exact weight of a skid, here’s the short answer: weight decides nearly everything about how your freight moves legally. The vocabulary: GVWR, curb weight and payload

  • GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) — the maximum the whole loaded vehicle is rated to weigh, set by the manufacturer. Truck, fuel, driver, equipment, freight: everything counts toward it.
  • Curb weight — what the vehicle weighs empty. Bodies, tailgates, shelving and equipment all add to it, which is why two trucks the same size can have different capacity.
  • Payload — the difference between the two. This is the number that matters to your shipment: how much freight the vehicle can legally and safely carry.

The trap for shippers is judging capacity by eye. A truck with a big box doesn’t necessarily have a big payload — cube and weight capacity are separate constraints, and dense freight like fasteners, tile or sheet metal runs out of legal weight long before it runs out of floor space. Why Ontario limits truck weights at all

Weight limits exist because roads and bridges are engineered structures with finite tolerance, and because heavy vehicles need distance to stop. Pavement wear rises steeply with axle loading — an overloaded axle does disproportionate damage, not proportionate damage — and bridges are rated for specific loadings. Braking, steering and tire performance all degrade when a vehicle carries more than it was designed for.

Total weight is only half the story — axles carry the load

A vehicle can be under its total limit and still be illegal, because weight limits also apply per axle. The freight’s position inside the truck decides how the load distributes: a heavy skid pushed against the front wall loads the drive axles differently than the same skid at the rear. Drivers and dispatchers think about this constantly, which is why they sometimes rearrange a pickup sequence or decline to add “just one more skid” that would sit in exactly the wrong spot.

For shippers, the practical consequence is that a truck’s remaining capacity isn’t a single number. Whether your freight fits a partially loaded vehicle depends on what’s already aboard and where. Spring changes the rules on some roads

Every spring, thawing frost temporarily weakens the roadbed under many Ontario roads, and the province and municipalities respond with reduced load periods — often called half-load season — on designated routes. During these windows, allowable weights drop on the affected roads, which can change routing or vehicle selection for freight moving off the main highway network into rural or industrial areas.

Why your declared weight has to be honest

Accurate weights protect you four ways:

  2. The quote holds. A price built on 400 lbs doesn’t survive contact with a 1,400-lb skid. Honest inputs mean no re-pricing conversation later.
  3. Equipment limits are respected. Tailgates (lift-gates) and pallet jacks are rated equipment. A load heavier than declared can exceed what the delivery equipment safely handles even when the truck itself could carry it.
