What is dimensional (dim) weight?

The formula is simple: multiply length × width × height to get the shipment’s volume, then divide by the carrier’s dim divisor. The divisor converts cubic size into a weight equivalent, and each carrier sets its own — in parcel shipping, a commonly published figure is 139 cubic inches per pound, with metric equivalents used the same way.
A worked example, using that illustrative divisor: a carton measuring 30″ × 20″ × 20″ contains 12,000 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that’s a dim weight of roughly 87 lb. If the contents actually weigh 30 lb, the shipment bills at 87 lb — the greater of the two. If the contents weigh 120 lb, dim weight is irrelevant and the shipment bills at actual weight.
Three details to keep straight:
- Measure at the extremes. Length, width and height are taken at the widest points, including packaging, overhang and anything protruding. Carriers round up.
- The divisor varies. Different carriers, services and modes use different divisors, and they change over time — always check the current figure for the service you’re using.
- Greater-of is the rule. Dim weight never lowers a bill; it only raises the billed weight when freight is lighter than its size suggests.
When dim weight applies — and when it works differently
Dim weight applies most directly in parcel networks, where automated dimensioners measure every box. In LTL freight, the same idea usually arrives as density-based pricing: the shipment’s weight divided by its cubic volume determines its rating, so a light, bulky skid rates worse than a dense one. Because trucks cube out before they weigh out. A typical straight truck can carry thousands of pounds, but its box holds a fixed number of cubic feet — and once the floor and stack height are used, the truck is full even if the scale says it’s half empty. A carrier hauling feather-light freight at scale-weight rates would be giving away most of the vehicle. Dim weight prices the resource that’s actually consumed: room.

How to keep billed weight close to scale weight
You can’t change the rule, but you control the density of what you tender:

- Cube skids deliberately. Stack level and dense, keep the load inside the 48″ × 40″ footprint, and avoid a single light layer riding on a full pallet.
