Dimensional Weight vs. Actual Weight: Which One You're Billed On
Dimensional weight explained in plain language — why carriers bill on space as well as scale weight, how the calculation works and how to keep it in check.

Put a big, light box on the scale and the scale tells you one story. The invoice may tell you another. That gap has a name — dimensional weight — and it’s one of the most common sources of confusion on freight and parcel bills. The rule underneath is simple: carriers charge on the greater of what a shipment weighs and the space it takes up, because a vehicle can run out of room long before it runs out of payload.
Here’s the concept from the ground up: why it exists, how the calculation works, where you’ll meet it, and what you can actually do about it.
Why carriers bill on space, not just the scale
A truck has two capacities, and freight consumes them at different rates. There’s payload — how much weight the vehicle can legally and safely carry — and there’s cube — how much volume the box or trailer holds. A load of steel fittings hits the payload limit with most of the cargo area still empty. A load of foam packaging fills every cubic foot while barely registering on the springs.
If carriers priced on scale weight alone, that second truck — completely full — would earn almost nothing. Dimensional weight exists to correct this: it translates the space a shipment occupies into a weight-equivalent, so that freight pays for whichever capacity it actually exhausts. It isn’t a penalty or a trick. It’s how a business that sells vehicle capacity keeps light-but-bulky freight from riding underpriced.
How the calculation works
Dimensional weight is calculated from a shipment’s outer dimensions:
- Measure length, width and height at the extremes — bulges, pallet overhang and packaging count, because they occupy space.
- Multiply the three together to get the volume.
- Divide by the carrier’s published dim divisor (also called a dim factor).
The divisor is what converts volume into a weight-equivalent, and each carrier sets and publishes its own. In North American parcel shipping, a divisor of 139 cubic inches per pound is common; in metric air freight, volume in cubic centimetres is often divided by a factor such as 5,000 to give kilograms. The exact number varies by carrier, mode and tariff — always check the one that applies to your account rather than assuming.
The final step is the comparison. The carrier rates the shipment on its billable weight: the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. Dense freight bills off the scale; bulky freight bills off the tape measure.
A worked example, in principle
Take a carton measuring 24″ × 20″ × 20″ — 9,600 cubic inches — holding inflatable product weighing very little on the scale. With a parcel divisor of 139, that carton’s dimensional weight comes out to roughly 69 pounds. If the scale says 12 pounds, the shipment bills at 69, because the space it occupies is what the carrier can’t sell twice.
Now fill the same carton with machined parts weighing 150 pounds. The dimensional weight hasn’t changed, but the actual weight now wins the comparison, and the shipment bills at 150. Same box, opposite outcomes — which is the whole idea. The question of whether weight or size matters more has a precise answer here: whichever one produces the bigger number.
Where you’ll meet dim weight — and where you won’t
Dimensional weight shows up differently depending on how freight moves:

That last row deserves the emphasis, because it’s where local shippers are often surprised in the pleasant direction. A regional courier quoting a direct run doesn’t push your carton through a divisor; it asks what vehicle the shipment needs and prices the run. Dimensions still matter — a skid that stands seven feet tall needs a next-day LTL truck, not a minivan — but size enters the price through vehicle selection, which is one of the broader factors that set courier pricing in the GTA, not through a formula applied to each box.

Keeping dimensional weight honest
You can’t negotiate with geometry, but you can stop paying for space you don’t use:
- Right-size the carton. The biggest dim-weight bills come from air: oversized boxes, void fill, one small item in a large carton. Tighter cartons cut billable weight directly.
- Measure at the extremes, before you quote. Carriers audit dimensions with scanners and re-bill discrepancies. A quote built on wrong dimensions is a bill waiting to be corrected.
- Watch pallet height and overhang. On palletized freight, cube is set by the built pallet, not the cartons. Overhang adds billable space and damage risk at the same time.
- Compare billable weight, not rates. Two carriers with different divisors can bill the same carton differently. The comparison that matters is what each would charge for your freight as it actually measures.
- Reconsider the mode. If dim charges are routine, the mode may be the problem. Freight that consistently bills on air is a candidate for consolidation onto skids or a courier run priced by the vehicle.
One habit does most of this work on its own: measure and weigh a sample of your standard shipments once, calculate both numbers, and record them. You’ll know in advance which products bill on the scale and which bill on the tape measure — before the invoice tells you.
